Services

Drop-in Help: Help is available for brief questions on a drop-in basis any time the Center is open. No appointment is necessary. See the hours listed above.

Appointments: Students seeking more extensive help with their math courses may sign up for half-hour individual appointments. Check the appointment schedule inside the Math Center. A new schedule is posted each Monday morning for the following week. You may sign up for at most two appointments per week.

Additional Help

Non-Credit Math Assistance: Students enrolled in MAT 001 or MAT 002 can receive assistance at the Math Success Center located in room B109.

Math/Test Anxiety: Help is available for math and test anxiety at the Math Anxiety Center located in room B109.

Private Tutors: The Center maintains a file of private math tutors. This listing is made available to students who feel they need extensive one-on-one tutoring. You may examine the list and make your own arrangements for off-campus private tutoring with one of the individuals listed. These tutors are not regulated or endorsed by the college or the Math Center.

Supplementary Material

Text Answers: Answer books for texts in most math courses may be borrowed for use in the Center. A current NCC I.D. card is required.

Worksheets: Self-help worksheets are available on a variety of topics.

Videos: Videotapes and/or CD-ROM's for MAT 001, 002, 003, 100, 109 and 111 are available for viewing in the Center. These videos are especially good for students who have missed class(es) or who wish further review of a topic. Tell us which course and chapter you are studying and we will give you the corresponding video and a headphone set. A current NCC I.D. card is required.

Making Effective Use of the Center

Set aside some time several times a week, for doing homework and studying in the Center. This is perhaps the most effective way of using the Center since you can check your answers in the solutions manuals and help is always available. Be sure to bring your class notes, textbook and a list of questions you may have.

Be realistic in your expectations. Do not go to the Math Center expecting to learn an entire chapter in one sitting. Tackle one section at a time and try to master one topic before moving on to the next. The best way to do this is to alternate between working on your own in the Center and getting help from the staff.

To be successful in your course work make sure you satisfy all course prerequisites, attend all classes, do the assigned readings and see your instructor during office hours when possible.

Do not wait until the last minute! Half-hour appointments get booked quickly and drop-in help is often busy.

Missed classes
Students who miss class(es) have the primary responsibility for learning the missed material.  The following steps should be taken before seeking help from the Math Center staff:

1.Find out (from either the instructor or a classmate) what was missed, i.e., the section(s) of the text that were covered and the homework that was assigned. Also, try to get class notes from a trusted classmate.

2. Do the assigned readings and attempt the homework.

3. If you are taking MAT 001, 002, 003, 100, 109 or 111, view the videos in the Math Center for the sections that were missed.

If, after the above steps have been taken, you have difficulty understanding the material or cannot do the assigned exercises, you are welcome to use any of the services the Math Center has to offer.

Policies

The Math Center's primary responsibility is to help Nassau Community College students with math problems. Non-mathematical questions from other subject areas should be directed to the respective departments.

You may not receive assistance on any take-home assignment that is to be graded. Math Center staff will report any attempt to violate this policy to your instructor.

Course success is primarily your responsibility. Math Center staff will help you with specific problems or topics, but it is not their job to do your homework for you. They will get you started; then you are responsible for making a genuine effort to complete the problem or absorb the topic before requesting additional help.

Due to the volume of students served by the Center, technical assistants may be limited in the amount of time that they are able to offer on a drop-in basis.

It is expected that you satisfy the prerequisites for the course you are taking.  Assistance with prerequisite material will be limited.

Noise should be kept to a minimum so as not to disturb students who are studying quietly.

All students must sign in upon entering and sign out when leaving. A valid NCC I.D. card is required. This information is extremely important for obtaining state aid.

Staff

The center is staffed by professional faculty of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Processing. There are usually between two and four technical assistants on duty at any given time.

While the Math Center staff are very knowledgeable, they don't profess to know the answer to every question that may arise.  In such cases, you are encouraged to ask another technical assistant or your instructor.
