Motive power consists of Kalamazoo (3), LGB (1) and USA Trains (1). The rolling stock is primarily dominated with USA Trains (30+) but contains pieces from Aristo/REA (6), LGB (4), Delton (3) and Bachmann (2).
Enjoying the many aspects of the hobby, I must confess that creating dioramas or vignettes within the layout is my first love. Structures and scenic elements consist of both commercially available items and scratch built. The water tower seen in the photograph is constructed with popsicle sticks.I strive to provide the clutter and overall mood to create a believable scene with prototypical dimensions coming second.
A digital camera provided me angles and views often seen when operating from a fixed point. Large scale trains provides the size so that small details can be seen from a six foot distance (approximately 30 scale feet). Purchasing rolling stock is my second love.
I anticipate the day when the basement becomes finished and I can tear down the M&RG and build version two. This version will provide close to thirty six feet of linear distance around three walls. It will feature walk around controls allowing for up-close switching operation. A yard and under the layout storage will provide places for rolling stock and motive power.
The layout, built on L-girder bench work allows for a strong construction base for the plywood roadbed. Built at a mean height of forty eight inches, a three foot tunnel, created from paper towels dipped in plaster over a cardboard frame, minimizes the round and round effect of the trains. A Y provides the ability to turn about 3 cars along with a passing track provides some interesting switching problems while still providing a realistic three to four car continuous running. The trackwork is LGB track and is attached directly to the plywood. The rail sides were painted with rust-colored paint and ballasted with kitty litter allowing for realistic and reliable operation. Scenery material (commercially available ground foam) attached with diluted latex paint. Two references that I still find helpful is How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery by David Frary and How to Build Model Railroad Benchwork by Linn H. Wescott, both from Kalmbach Books.
